Description
This course is presented in association with AdventureMed and Wilderness Medical Society (USA). It is designed for persons who already have a medical qualification or who have obtained the Wilderness First Responder certification and wish to further their knowledge and skills, or as refresher.
Over three days we will introduce aspects of wilderness medicine ranging from planning a medical kit, survival strategies, hygiene, water and food planning, to the use of specialised equipment in the remote environment including a variety of extrication and transport devices.
The standard course includes catered camping for three days on the banks of the Palmiet River. An outdoor classroom is available for lectures and we’ve even managed to stream sporting events for important matches!
Skin lesions, twisted ankles and bug bites are all familiar problems, but what about lightning strike or injured SCUBA divers? Altitude and cold present challenges both to patients and rescuers: how do we mitigate and when can we wait it out vs needing to evacuate emergently?
WLS:MP discusses the presentation and management of all of these topics and more, with lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, practical skills and shared experience improvising in the field. We show you examples from our own medical kits, a variety of rescue and survival equipment and give lessons learned from real experiences.
Any medical professional who works or plays outdoors or in remote areas will benefit from this course. Medical, paramedical or associated health-care professionals are all invited to join us, regardless of the level of training. No prior wilderness experience is required. Custom programs are available upon request. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and skills that can help them save lives and prevent medical emergencies from escalating in remote and wilderness settings.
Wild Medix will be running this course in Cape Town, South Africa as a residential course over 3 days. The courses for 2025 will run from our tented camp set-up on the Palmiet River, near the town of Kleinmond.
